Travel Diary // Kefalonia

Melissani Cave Lake

Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands in Western Greece. Hubby and I visited this beautiful part of our country in 2007 during our Summer vacation. It has many beautiful beaches, unique in the whole world black pine trees that cover mount Ainos, a breathtaking cave lake, Melissani, and great domestic architecture.

Beaches
-- Avithos is on the Southern part of the island. It is sandy, with crystal clear waters and great view to Zakynthos island (Zante). We really enjoyed swimming here!

Avithos Beach

-- Emblisi is on the Northern side of the island, near the fishing village of Fiskardo. It is too small with white pebbles (not very comfortable to sit or lie) and too popular, which were the reasons why we couldn't find a space to settle down or swim... It is worth visiting though, on your way to Fiskardo, for sightseeing.

Emblisi Beach

-- Xi is the island's "red beach". It is sandy with shallow waters and maybe the most popular for families with small children. The beach is very organized with umbrellas and sundecks. There is also a beach bar and a water sports center. It is near Lixouri, on the Southwest, the second biggest town of Kefalonia.

Xi Beach

-- Myrtos is the island's most popular, most beautiful, most breathtaking beach! It is located on the Northwestern side of Kefalonia and is ideal to watch the sunset. The place is magical: white sand, turquoise waters and white rocks surrounding the beach. We were unlucky, because the day we went the wind blew from the North and had brought a lot of litter to the shore... But if you are lucky, you are going to have a unique all-day experience. TIP: DON'T FORGET YOUR CAMERAS!

Nature
-- Black Pine Trees can be found only on Mount Ainos and nowhere else in the whole world! The difference in color between green and black pine trees is very obvious on the photo below.

-- Melissani Cave Lake is on the Northeastern side of Kefalonia, between Sami and Agia Efthymia. What can I say about this unreal place! Ever since I got in there, I have been dreaming about it in my most beautiful and relaxing dreams... I want to go back to the island just to get inside that cave again - bare in mind that I am not really fond of caves... not at all! TIP: BRING YOUR CAMERAS ALONG =)

Dozens of people squeezing down the cave to get inside a boat for a ride!

The top of the ceiling has fallen. This is how they discovered the cave lake!

Crystal clear and cold waters.
